Up until this point in my life, I have never really been
much of a wine drinker. When picking my poison I will most likely choose beer
or liquor. Because of these preferences I have chosen to leave the wine on the
shelf. However, I believe that wine is a much more complex alcoholic beverage,
so I think it is time to start trying it out.
Up until this point I have really only had wine at specific
family functions or at larger fancy meals. For instance, I always have a glass
of wine at Thanksgiving but never cared much for the taste. I have not yet been
able to pinpoint why I am not the biggest fan, but hope to explore a lot of
different varieties this semester. I believe that I would enjoy something that
is a little more fruity and pleasant on my palate. Some people have told me that I don’t like what
I’ve had because it is considered extremely “dry” wine. Though I don’t fully
know what that means, I am interested to find out through this class.
It is this uncertainty and lack of knowledge that has me
taking this class. I want to feel more intelligent and knowledgeable when in a
situation where I will be drinking wine. One thing that I am especially
interested in is how to prepare and serve a meal that can be paired with wine. I am interested in learning the different
grape varieties and how certain flavors are established in wines. I am also
interested in how to bring out and really taste the different flavors in wine
because I have been unsuccessful in doing so as of now. The final thing that I
am really looking forward to this semester is going out and exploring many of
the great vineyards that Virginia has to offer. I believe that there is a reason that wine has
been around for thousands of years, and I am looking forward to exploring and
becoming a part of that rich history.
